Strategy, mistake and custom tags
- Strategy tags describe the repeatable setup or method, such as London breakout or VWAP pullback.
- Mistake tags describe a process error, such as FOMO, moved stop or oversized risk.
- Custom tags add a user-defined classification when the available strategy and mistake groups do not fit. TraderWaves includes a system Custom group; this is different from creating an entirely new group.
Keep setup and mistake tags separate. A valid setup can be executed poorly, and a losing trade can still follow the setup correctly.
System tags vs Pro custom groups
The system Strategy, Mistakes and Custom groups—and tags created inside those system groups—are available as part of the core Journal experience. Creating an additional user-defined tag group and using tags inside that new group requires TraderWaves Pro.
The Pro boundary is custom group organisation, not all tagging. System assessment types, rating and Mindset are also separate structured-review tools; they should not be described as ordinary tags.
Remove a tag from a trade vs delete the tag
Removing a tag detaches it from the current trade. Deleting a custom tag changes the reusable vocabulary itself and can affect how previously tagged history is organised.
Remove an accidental assignment freely. Delete or rename a reusable tag only when you have decided how old trades should be interpreted, because changing labels mid-sample can make comparisons inconsistent.
Rules for a useful tagging system
- Use one primary strategy tag per trade when possible.
- Keep names short, specific and stable over the review period.
- Do not create synonyms such as
FOMO,fear of missing outandlate chaseunless they represent different rules. - Tag winners, losers and breakevens consistently.
- Record market observations in notes when they are too specific to be a durable category.
- Review and consolidate the vocabulary periodically without rewriting history casually.
Filter and analyse tagged trades
Open the shared Filter modal, select Journal filters, and choose strategy, mistake or custom tags. Apply one tag at a time when validating a setup, then compare the same account and date range.
Reports Activity can identify the best-performing strategy-tag segment in the selected sample. That label is an investigation prompt, not proof that the tag caused performance. Confirm trade count, expectancy, payoff, profit factor and outcome concentration using the Trade outcomes guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Pro to use tags?
No. The system Strategy, Mistakes and Custom groups and their tags are part of the core Journal. Pro is required to create additional user-defined groups and use tags inside them.
Should a setup and a mistake use the same tag group?
No. Strategy tags describe what you traded, while mistake tags describe how execution departed from the plan. Keeping them separate makes analysis clearer.
How many strategy tags should one trade have?
Prefer one primary strategy tag when possible. Add separate context only when it represents a durable category you intend to compare later.
Why does a tagged equity metric become unavailable?
Trade tags can filter a trade sample, but they cannot safely reconstruct the historical account-equity curve. TraderWaves leaves incompatible account-level metrics unavailable.
